Inthemix names top 100 dance tracks of 2013

Inthemix Announces Best 100 Dance Tracks of the Year

-The strength of the local scene shines, 16 homegrown acts placing on the list

-Daft Punk take out #1 spot with Get Lucky

Local talent has dominated inthemixs list of the The 100 Best Tracks of 2013, with 16 Australian electronic acts included in the comprehensive countdown.

“Our seven-person editorial team and crew of staff writers at inthemix are immersed in electronic music all day, every day: these 100 tunes are the ones that stuck in our heads, the ones that will forever define the past 12 months. said inthemix Editor Nick Jarvis, Not just the tunes that topped the charts or were on high rotation in clubs and at festivals but also the unsung heroes.”

Deservedly, it was Daft Punk who took out the number one spot with their highly anticipated comeback single Get Lucky, which peaked at #1 on the ARIA Charts, went five times platinum in Australia and recently earned the French duo a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year.

Local hero Flume, who earlier this month dominated the ARIA Awards with four wins, was the highest placing Australian artist at #15 with his remix of Disclosures You & Me. While none of his breakthrough hits made it into the list, his influence on the local scene was well and truly felt, said inthemixs Deputy Editor Katie Cunningham.

“Flume’s self-titled debut was actually released at the tail end of 2012, meaning tracks from the album didn’t qualify for inclusion in our 2013 list. However, his presence was definitely felt on the list. The ‘Australian Sound’ explosion he’s helped pioneer saw new artists like L D R U, Wave Racer and Cosmo’s Midnight make huge debuts this year – not to mention the success of Flume’s other project, What So Not. We’re in the thick of a very exciting time in Australian dance music right now.”

Theres little doubt that Australian electronic music is currently experiencing whats been dubbed the Golden Age. Discussion around the strength of the local scene dominated talks at last weeks Electronic Music Conference in Sydney, with founder Neil Ackland telling the Guardian The music thats been coming out of Australia over the past few years has really made a mark on a global level.

Nine of the 16 locals to appear on the list have only been around for 12 or less months, a sign of just how quickly the local scene has exploded says Jarvis The sheer amount of talent emerging in Australian electronic music right now is more than just an isolated phenomenon – it’s a cultural movement.

The scope of inthemix’s 100 Best Tracks of 2013, which features everything from James Blakes down-tempo ballad Retrograde to club hit Eat Sleep Rave Repeat from 50 year-old dance music veteran Fatboy Slim, makes it clear that dance music is no longer an underground movement limited to raves and clubs, but the latest music genre to cross over to the mainstream.
